About

Honouring Hoople Creek Matriarchs

They crossed hundreds of miles of wilderness to remain loyal to their King.
They buried children in frozen ground and planted crops in unfamiliar soil.
They built a country from the edge of a creek in eastern Ontario —
and history almost forgot their names.
Matriarchs of the Hoople Creek Loyalists tells the stories of 18 remarkable women whose families were among the first United Empire Loyalists to settle along Hoople Creek in Upper Canada after the American Revolution. Through their own voices — told in the first person as if they were here today — these women speak of survival, of faith, of loss, and of the quiet determination that built the foundations of eastern Ontario.

This book is such a great read. With he stories told as they are, it makes you feel as though the Matriarchs are speaking to you. The trials and tribulations they dealt with would have many including myself whimpering in a corner. I highly recommend this. I am honored to be a descendant of such a strong woman..

What can I say? This treasure of a book is by far one of the best historical fiction books out there, and it is placed in a sacred space on my bookshelf.

This work of art is based on fact, and yet stepped in the well researched imagination of the author. Not only does he capture the essence of what it was like to be a pioneer (women) in Canadian history, but he captures the emotions, surroundings, culture, and family life that these incredible women of Hoople Creek must have experienced.

I am honored to have this book in my hands, but even more honored to have a direct connection to Granny Hoople. My grandfather would have adored this book and likely would have loved to have helped weave the story of his birth in Granny Hooples home.

John, thank you from Granny Hoople, and her descendants for giving us all this gift.

P.S. there is also other pretty incredible Matriarchs that were so well represented ♥️
